Description of the changes undergone in the soils surrounding Fort Pulaski since the fort's construction in the mid-1800's. Channel dredging and jetty construction has caused sediment accretion in the fort area. Fort Pulaski National Monument was established in 1924. Beginning in 1829, the location was used to develop a masonry fortress in order to guard the river approaches to the Savannah. The construction required 18 years for completion due to the great challenge of erecting the fort on a salty tidal marsh giving extreme limitation for foundation construction.
