This author studied movement patterns and activity of Roosevelt elk at Gold Bluffs Beach in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in 1973. The rut occurred between August and November. Charts show elk distribution on the beach or dune area, habitat-type use, distances traveled, and percentage of observations in various activities (by group: master bulls, bachelor bulls, yearling bulls, cows, calves). Physical condition of the bulls deteriorates during the rut, largely because of less feeding. This study of daily activities showed that neither weather nor tourists had much effect.
