Fuel Levels in Forests of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Fuel levels were sampled in 93 permanent plots. Nine forest types were identified. No relationship of forest type to fuel load was found, but there was a relationship between virgin forests (greater load) and those regenerating after disturbance (lesser load). Different forest types had different fuel loads. Elevation was the most significant factor in determining the fuel load, with the fir forest having the greatest fuel load.
