Fuels, Weather, and Lightning Fires in Olympic National Park
Pickford SG, Fahnestock GR, Ottmar R. 1977. Fuels, Weather, and Lightning Fires in Olympic National Park. University of Washington, Cooperative Park Studies Unit. Seattle
From the Abstract: "A cooperative study following consultation between ONP staff and the College of Forest Resources, University of Washington, investigated fuels and weather as they influence fire potential in ONP: (1) Fuels in ONP were inventoried for fuel loading and evaluated for rate of spread and resistance to control with standard fuel evaluation procedures. Results were used to revise a 1941 fuel type map (the most recent one available). (2) Fire occurrences from ONP Fire Reports, fire atlases, and file reports were mapped and used for preliminary analysis of fire occurrence by location, elevation, and year. (3) Weather records from the Park periphery were cross-correlated with fire occurrences to derive preliminary estimates of probabilities of fire occurrence."
