This paper describes a methodology called "Gap Analysis" which takes a different approach to maintaining biological diversity than the conventional way of proceeding species by species and threat by threat. It identifies the gaps in representation of biodiversity in places which are managed mainly for the long-term maintenance of populations of native species and natural ecosystems. Once these gaps are identified, they are filled through new reserve acquisitions or through changes in management practices. This paper describes the methodology and discusses its advantages and disadvantages.
