Paleolimnology of a Cape Cod Kettle Pond: Diatoms and Reconstructed pH
Winkler, Marjorie Green. 1988. Paleolimnology of a Cape Cod Kettle Pond: Diatoms and Reconstructed pH. Ecological Monographs. 58(3):197-214
The reconstructed pH history of Duck Pond in Cape Cod National Seashore shows that the pond has been acid over the past 12,000 years, with a mean pH of 5.3 + 0.3, and a suggestion of an increase in the past 150 years (to 5.1 + 0.1). These results show that more long-term pH lake histories are needed to distinguish naturally acidic lakes from anthropogenically degraded lakes. Factors affecting the pH of ponds include forest fires, windborne industrial acids, and vegetation changes.
