This document contains three major elements. A general management plan addresses a number of management issues including wild rivers, natural and cultural resources, access, subsistance, recreation, and need for NPS operation and facilities. The plan's goal is to maintain natural and healthy populations of fish and wildlife in cooperation with the State. A land protection plan identifies the Park's interest in nonfederal lands, especially Native allotments, Native corporation lands, and mining claims in and around the Park/Preserve boundary. The majority of non-federal tracts are small and represent a long pattern of human occupation and subsistence culture and are compatible with wilderness values. Mining claims will be contested or acquired; Native corporation lands will be acquired via land exchanges; and a boundary adjustment along the Nigu River is recommended. A wilderness suitability review identifies 1,009,638 acres suitable for wilderness, 190,023 acres not suitable, and 9,641 acres pending suitable determination as land status is resolved.
