On July 19-20, 1977, severe thunderstorms produced record rainfalls over western Pennsylvania, resulting in some of the worst floods known in the Northeast. Just north and east of Johnstown, 12 inches of rain fell in 9 hours. Severe flash floods were common on many small streams. For eight gaged streams, estimated recurrence intervals for the peak discharge were 100 years or more. The floods caused at least 78 deaths and possibly more than $500 million in damages. Seven earthfill gravity-type dams were also breached.--from New Publications of the Geological Survey, November 1982.
