Genetic analyses through DNA fingerprinting of captive populations of Hawai`ian geese

DNA fingerprinting was used to determine genetic variations in 106 captive njnj (Nesochen sandvicensis) in Hawaii and at Slimbridge, England. Mantel tests were used to determine differences in mean similarity coefficients obtained from the fingerprints between related and unrelated njnj within and between colonies, and to determine whether pedigree-based estimates of relatedness correlated with DNA fingerprint-based estimates. Between populations, mean similarity coefficients for related and unrelated geese at Slimbridge were higher than those for their Hawaiian counterparts. Within each colony, related njnj possessed higher mean similarity coefficients than did unrelated individuals. Coancestry coefficients and similarity coefficients showed a positive relationship.
