Genetics of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Sockeye were sampled for genetic analysis in 1984 and 1985 from five tributaries to Brooks Lake; from Brooks River above and below the falls; and from four tributaries to Naknek Lake. Analyses show that the five stocks spawning in Brooks Lake tributaries are genetically distinct from one another and, as a whole, are different from the somewhat homogeneous group that comprises the spawners in Brooks River and Naknek Lake tributaries. The genetic similarities between Katmai and other southcentral Alaska stocks of sockeye salmon are also discussed.
