Sand Myrtle's discontinuous range is on the higher summits of the Great Smokies and the Blue Ridge, then the Cape Fear region of North Carolina, then to the pine barrens of New Jersey. The author theorizes that the species originated in what is now the Southern Appalachians and spread along a coastal plain that has long since submerged. On the basis of leaf shape, the author separates the Southern Appalachian sand myrtles into a new species, L. lyoni.
