A section of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Hoover Dam to Mount Davis, Arizona, was surveyed for water resources as part of a larger geohydrology survey of the recreation area. The studies locate areas of potential development of water supplies, investigating wells and springs, determining the chemical characteristics of the water sources, mapping (at 1:62,500), and studying the geologic features of the area and how they affect water movement and occurrence. The principal source of groundwater reservior in the area is the unconsolidated sedimentary rocks adjacent to Lake Mohave; the lake is the main source of recharge to the aquifer. The most favorable rock unit for the development of groundwater supplies is the Chemehuevi Formation, which generaly will yield more that 1,000 gpm of water to propery constructed and developed wells; however, the Chemehuevi Formation is not widespread in the report area. The potential for surface-water development is almost non-existent except for the Colorado River. Flow in the ephemeral streams is meager, an average of about 50 acre feet per year from the largest drainage basin, and it is extremely variable from year to year.
