Coronado National Memorial Plant Checklist - A synonymized list of the vascular plants
Parfitt BD and Christy CM. 1992. Coronado National Memorial Plant Checklist - A synonymized list of the vascular plants. Department of Botany, Arizona State University. Tempe, Arizona
This is an updated list of the families, genera, species, subspecies and varieties of vascular plants of the Coronado National Memorial. The present list differs from previous versions in that the plants are placed into two major groups, Pteridophytes (ferns) and Spermatophytes (seed plants). Within these groups the families, genera, and species are alphabetically arranged for easy access. Family nomenclature primarily follows that of Cronquist (1981), but rare exceptions have been made to avoid separation of closely related groups; these are cross referenced. This list follows the modern tendency to to use uniform (i.e., -aceae) endings for all families: thus the Compositae become Asteraceae; Gramineae => Poaceae; Guttiferae => Clusiaceae ; Labiatae => Lamiaceae; Leguminosae => Fabaceae; Palmae => Arecaceae; and Umbelliferae => Apiaceae. When a specimen is clearly different from other species in the Memorial but its species name could not be determined (usually an immature, preflowering individual), the genus name is given, followed by "sp." When varieties or subspecies could not be determined with certainty from the information available, none is listed. Common names, set off by quotation marks, are given for species not listed prior to the beginning of the study in 1988. The remaining nomenclature follows Lehr (1978) and Lehr and Pinkava (1980; 1982; unpublished). For biographic briefs on authors of plant names (often abbreviated), refer to Munz (1959). The present list includes about 580 species compared to the approcimately 230 species listed prior to 1988.
