The need for research on the impacts of livestock grazing in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA) has been identified by National Park Service (NPS) personnel. This preliminary report represents the first phase of the research project requested by NPS staff. It contains a review of the current literature on vegetative and wildlife monitoring. Recommendations for a diverse and intensive monitoring program are included. Finally, the report discusses the development of a composite ecological index to be used by NPS personnel in evaluating the effects of livestock grazing in the GLCA.
