The approximately 280 brown bears (Ursus arctos) on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska are subjected to significant human impacts. A cumulative effect model was developed to evaluate the effects of several human actions on habitat capability for brown bears on the Chugach National Forest portion of the Kenai Peninsula. Changes in habitat quality for brown bears (habitat submodel) and reduced effectiveness of that habiat (human activities submodel) due to disturbance and mortality were evaluated. Habitat effectiveness was estimated to be reduced approximately 70% as a result of current human activities. Application of the model's results during land management planning will play a key role in avoiding future crisis management and in maintaining a viable population of brown bears on the Kenai Peninsula.
