The Exotic Species Eradication Program (ESEP) was established in 2000 in response to growing concern from both resource managers and visitors of the spread of non-native species of plants to the Exit Glacier area. The ecosystem in the Exit Glacier area is unique in that it is a model of vegetational succession patterns following de-glaciation. The Resource Management Plan of Kenai Fjords National Park (KEFJ) stresses the importance of keeping the park in as close to a natural state as possible. Exotic species have the potential to overtake native species and displace their populations entirely.
