During the summer of 2001 work was initiated to ground truth the GIS vegetation map created by Spatial Solutions and Ducks Unlimited (Kenai Peninsula Earth Cover Classification 1999). The purpose of the Kenai Fjords National Park (KEFJ) study was to create a comprehensive vegetation map for the Exit Glacier Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) study area using the GIS ArcView mapping project created by Ducks Unlimited and Spatial Solutions as a base. One hundred and twenty plots (100 m square) were set up in fourteen vegetation types to determine the species composition and percent cover within each. Site characteristics at each plot including elevation, slope, aspect, soils, and vegetative community type were recorded. Trees, shrubs, forbs, mosses and lichens growing within the study area were inventoried. Mapping and inventory will continue in the summer of 2002.
