A "standard" carcass survey was carried-out throughout the summer following protocols issued by Mike Tetreau. Basically, the high tide/ debris line of beaches was walked and carcasses were counted and rated for age and degree of scavenging. It should be noted that the extent of starvation was to be noted on recent carcasses but all the samples we found were quite old. It should also be noted that rock outcroppings were found to have the highest counts of carcasses. Due to the difficulty of both time and accessibility, these areas were generally surveyed only when other work had to be performed (such as when waypoints were obtained during the coastal imagery project); the high counts in these areas can be attributed to scavengers- in particular, bald eagles.
