Survey of Pale Poppies

A survey of pale poppies (Papaver alboroseum) was conducted near the end of the HIT on 7/9/99 by EG Bio. Tech. David Morgan. The following are the notes describing how the survey was conducted. All distances given refer to trail distance, not line-of-sight distance. The first poppy plant was seen approximately 105m beyond (to the south of) the emergency shelter on the HIT. A piece of rebar ( rebar 1 ) was pounded into the ground near the plant on the south side of the trail to mark the northern terminus of the survey route. The surveyed area began from rebar 1, and headed away from the shelter (south) for approximately 160m, where the trail veers to the east. I chose to end the survey at this point, because to continue further would have added few poppy plants, and would have required crossing a wide area of snow before the next patch of bare ground. This southern end point was marked by a second piece of pounded rebar ( rebar 2 ) adjacent to the trail on the south side. Both pieces of rebar protrude about 10cm above the surface. A large rock cairn was built approximately 20m north of rebar 2, just to the east of a natural high point in the rolling terrain.
