Changes in the Harding Icefield and its outlet glaciers dramatically affect almost every major watershed on the Kenai Peninsula. Hydrology, weather, geomorphology, fjord ecosystems, soils, vegetation, fish and wildlife are all influenced by this coastal ice mass. This project will support continued mass balance and volume change monitoring using airborne laser profiling techniques that have been conducted by the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks throughout the 1990 s. Current glacier terminus positions and equilibrium line positions and elevations will also be mapped using similar techniques. Another component of this project will be to establish a program for measuring annual accumulation on the Harding Icefield and Exit Glacier. This information will be summarized in a pictorial atlas that would serve as both a scientific and interpretive reference.
