This project implemented a monitoring program that focuses primarily on riparian and meadow breeding songbirds and utilizes point counts, habitat assessments, mist netting, and educational outreach. Specific project goals are to: 1) document use of montane meadow and riparian habitat by migrant, molting and pre migration and meadow and non-meadow breeding landbirds. 2) provide educational opportunities for visitors on avian ecology, natural history and conservation and on the Devils Postpile avian monitoring program. 3) provide summary information for the development of a long term adaptive management monitoring plan. This report is for the first year of what is planned to be an on-going monitoring program. Fifteen point count stations were established along a north-south transect in the monument. In addition to bird counts, habitat was assessed at each station using Sawyer/Keeler-Wolf habitat series. MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) stations were operated in Soda Springs Meadow on 9 dates in the summer of 2002. Seventy-eight bird species are documented for the monument, and breeding status evaluated for all species.
