The primary goal of the bird inventories is to document the presence of bird species not yet documented at the parks so that at east 90% of the expected breeding species at a park will have been documented by the end of the inventory effort. The inventories will also provide an update on the status of previously documented species in each park. Documented and expected species in each park were classified by the Northern Great Plains I&M Program. Because some bird species may be cryptic and their populations dynamic, the inventories will be carried out over a three-year period, after which time a fairly complete assessment of the breeding avifauna within each park should be possible...This report details the findings from the first year of what will hopefully become a long-term, cooperative effort to monitor and track bird populations in the national parks in the Northern Great Plains region.
