This study, sponsored by the Natural Sounds Program of the NPS, was an exploration of the uses of digital acoustic recordings to supplement avian point count surveys during the breeding season in Canyonlands National Park in 2002. An acoustic monitor, stationed at an established point count survey station in Salt Creek, collected 1-minute digital audio recordings every 5 minutes between 0500-0900 throughout the month of May. An Access database was created to record species identified from the audio recordings. Results showed that the digital recordings added significantly to species richness data collected during the on-going point count survey, and that digital recordings revealed patterns in diurnal and seasonal singing frequency. Further potential uses, as well as limits, are discussed. Contains tables and graphs reflecting the results, and an Appendix showing the data entry screen for the database.
