Hanging gardens were studied for the level of endemism among vascular plant taxa, in three national park units on the Colorado Plateau. The number of hanging-garden endemics per hanging garden was significantly higher in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area than in Zion National Park or in Capitol Reef National Park. Capitol Reef's lower numbers may be because it had smaller hanging gardens, possibly because of the absence of an adequate sandstone aquifer. But Zion's hanging gardens were as large as Glen Canyon's, yet contained less endemics. The higher level of endemism at Glen Canyon may be due to one of two factors: a more abrupt change to aridity at the edge of Glen Canyon gardens compared to the edge of Zion gardens, or Glen Canyon's general location at the boundary of the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin floras.
