2006. Vascular plant inventory, vegetation community classification, mapping, and accuracy assessment report information for Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, as part of the NPS Vegetation Mapping Program. Durham, NC

NPS partnered with ecologists from NatureServe and the University of Georgia to establish baseline vegetation conditions at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. (1) Ecologists from NatureServe established 35 permanently marked one-hectare circular plots within the park in a grid system and another 14 plots in unique ecological areas that were not covered by the initial grid-based plot layout. (2) Ecologists collected data on all unique vegetation communities within the park and identified 25 natural and eight human-modified or successional vegetation associations (unique ecological assemblages of plants) within the park boundary. (3) Ecologists collected and vouchered 237 specimens, all of which were new to the park. These species were added to an existing list that included vouchers from projects done by earlier researchers. Once the vegetation inventory and classification was complete, the Center for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science (CRMS) at the University of Georgia proceeded to create a digital vegetation map for the park. Using the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS) developed by Natureserve, with additional classes and modifiers, overstory vegetation communities for each park were interpreted from stereo color infrared aerial photographs using manual interpretation methods. Following the creation of the vegetation map, a full accuracy assessment was conducted as documented in the accuracy assessment report and contingency table.
