This document presents the results of a two-year study (conducted in 1986 and 1987) of the environment of American Creek. It also describes impacts resulting from recreational use of the area. Impact on shore vegetation from trampling and boat storage was studied to determine if removal of vegetation from the river banks contributed to erosion. The primary impetus behind the investigation was increasing recreational jet boat use and concerns over the affects of such traffic on instream turbidity. The Creek has a high natural turbidity and jet boat traffic was found to increase turbidity levels. However, the authors conclude that there is no evidence to support a reduction in jet boat usage. The area of greatest conflict is defined as occurring between miles 3 to 6, where the substrate is suitable for spawning and where most fishing occurs.
