1992 stranded oil persistence study on Kenai Fjords National Park and Katmai National Park and Preserve: Interim status report, March 22

Schoch C. 1993. 1992 stranded oil persistence study on Kenai Fjords National Park and Katmai National Park and Preserve: Interim status report, March 22. National Park Service, Alaska Regional Office Coastal Programs Division. Anchorage, AK

(Adapted from author's abstract.) This study evaluated the relative physical and chemical degradation rates of stranded oil mousse on beaches of Kenai Fjords and Katmai National Parks. Six beaches retaining oil were assessed during summer 1992. At each beach an oil-coverage transect, as well as horizontal and vertical profiles, were established. Data were gathered on slope, aspect, substrate, and elevation. These data will be used with subsequent data sets to determine the rate of physical degradation. A sample of oil mousse was collected at each site. Chemical degradation rates will be determined following hydrocarbon analysis of samples collected in 1989 and 1992. Oil samples are scheduled to be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
