Sport Fish Survey, Katmai National Park

At the request of the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service carried out a reconnaissance type survey of the sport fishery of Katmai Monument, during the period June 1 - August 31, 1954. The work was done as a federal aid in fish restoration project under the supervision of Urban C. Nelson, Federal Aid Leader, and W. A. Elkins, Wildlife Management Supervisor, of the Regional Office of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Juneau, Alaska. The field work was performed by John Greenbank, Fishery Biologist, assisted by Ronald Lopp. The objectives of the survey included: a determination of the kinds, distribution, and abundance of sport fishes; and assessment of the fishing pressure on the waters within the Monument, and the resultant take of fish; appraisal of the effect upon the fishery of fishing by natives; the securing of information regarding growth rates, condition factors, movements, and spawning of game fishes; and a study of other factors affecting the fishery.
