The management of brown bears in natonal parks is an important tool allowing the preservation of natural brown bear population dynamics and at the same time to provide a safe environment for the people. The management of Katmai National PArk and Preserve, Alaska emphasizes a preventative management through which encounters between humans and bears are minimized. Data collected during the summer of 1992 show a general trend in which subadult bears newly weaned by their mother are involved in most of the encounters. They therefore must be of special concern in future management questions. Many encounters were caused by people violating the rules of the park.
