In Alaska, the tundra biome forms a broad crescent along the western and northern coasts. Beginning down the Alaska Peninsula, this tundra zone extends north and then east for almost 2500 km to the MacKenzie River Delta in Canada. While the width of this zone varies greatly, nowhere does it extened inland more than 320 km from the ocean. Throughout its extent along the west coast, it is backed by the boreal spruce forest or taiga of the interior. The proposed Katmai Western Extension lies at the southwest end of the tundra crescent and therefore includes some of the southernmost examples of maritime tundra inAlaska.
