Savonoski Crater, Katmai National Monument, Alaska 1964
Muller E and Ward P. 1966. Savonoski Crater, Katmai National Monument, Alaska 1964. Nationanl Science Foundation
A sub-circular, rock-walled crater one-third of a mile in maximum dimension was investigated in Katmai National Monument, Alaska, during the summer field season of 1964 in an effort to establish its character and probable origin. The enigmatic nature of the lake-filled crater arised from the lack of features indicative of a common volcanic, glacial, fluvial or solution origin. Developed in gently dipping Jurassic sandstone, the crater lacks all trace of a volcanic pile or tephra ring that might substatiate a volcanic origin. The absence of soluble rock within or beneath the stratigraphic section in which the crater is formed virtually rules out possible origin as a sink. Superficial morphologic evidence fails to support either glacial or fluvial origin. Structural, morphologic and geophysical data place stringent demands on the alternative hypthesis that the crater may have orgiinated as a prodcut of meteoritic impact.
