Following the establishment of Katmai National Monument in 1918 to protect volcanic phenomena associated with the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, subsequent additions to the monument, its designation as a national park , and the establishment of Katmai National Preserve were for the purpose of protecting the ecological and scientific values of the natural ecosystem, particularly wildlife. The goal of resource management in Katmai National Park and Preserve is to maintain the natural and cultural environments unimpaired by modern human presence and to restore natural areas of the park that have been modified by modern human influences.
