Martin JC. 1989. Inventory of coastal seabirds In Katmai National Park and Preserve during 1989 : Exxon Valdez oil spill monitoring operation. National Park Service, Katmai National Park and Preserve. King Salmon, AK

Near shore waters along the entire coast of Katmai National Park were used by large numbers of 2 species of waterfowl, 3 species of cormorant, a large gull, a small gull, & 5 alcid species during the summer months of 1989. Numerous other species were observed in smaller numbers. Mixed species colonies of over 300 breeding pairs of seabirds were observed at 9 sites distributed throughout the Katmai coast; two of these sites, Ninagiak Island & Shaw Island, were observed to contain a thousond or more breeding pairs. Smaller colonies were observed at 19 other sites. The common breeding seabirds, in decreasing order of abundance, were Glaucous-winged Gulls, Tufted Puffins, cormorant species, Horned Puffins, Pigeon Guillemots, & Black-legged Kittiwakes. Most oiled carcasses of seabirds collected along the Katmai coast were probably killed at sea far from shore. Murres, by far the most common seabirds found dead along the Katmai coast, were not observed to breed there.
