The March 24, 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill prompted the National Park Service to conduct a thorough mapping of coastal park resources to aid in assesment of impact on these resources. Roughly two-third's of Katmai National Park & Preserve's blad eagle (Haliaeetus leucoencephalus) population inhabits the coastal waters of the Shelikof Strait. The objectives of this project were to 1) map location of active raptor nests & conduct raptor counts 2) monitor bald eagle productivity 3) document & collect evidence of oil impacts on raptors.
