Vegetation Mapping at Bryce Canyon

Park staff in need of a current map of vegetation and land cover for Bryce Canyon National Park, initiated a program in 1993 to map vegetation in and around the park. The four-part program comprised 1) identify plant communities and develop a park vegetative map using air photos and by on-site quantitative studies; 2) gather information on fire fuel loading for each vegetative community; 3) collect plant specimens to update park flora; and 4) locate rare plants and their habitats. A minimum mapping unit of 100 square meters was established. Recent color air photos were used, scale 1:12,000, with topography maps, and site visits. Transects were established to measure vegetative canopy, shrub cover, forbs and grasses, down material, bare ground and other pertinent information.
