Soil formation in severe arctic-alpine environments is accompanied by much internal soil disturbance and movement, both horizontal and vertical. Such disturbance is produced by intensive freezing and thawing of saturated soils and results in many kinds of patterned ground, some of such size as to be conspicuous in the landscape, while others are on a micro scale. Because of the importance of the freeze-thaw cycle in such environments, the solid-forming processes involved are referred to as "cryopedogenic."
