The exploration party led by J. Edward Spurr reached what is now the community of Bethel on August 10, 1898, more than 90 days after starting from Tyonek on Cook Inlet on a journey that marked the first recorded passage throughout the Alaska Range by white men. While restoring body and spirit in Bethel, the explorers become acquainted with a pioneer white trader, missionary and doctor. They enter the world of the Eskimo, participate in the custom of Igro-oski, learn how to use a kayak and plan to penetrate a new and little-known region of Alaska.
