The Marine Foods of Birds in an Inland Fjord Region in West Spitsbergen: Part 1. Plankton and in Shore Benthos
Stott FC. 1936. The Marine Foods of Birds in an Inland Fjord Region in West Spitsbergen: Part 1. Plankton and in Shore Benthos. Journal of Animal Ecology. 5(2):356-369
Some account is given of the marine ecology of an inner fjord region in West Spitsbergen. The surface macroplankton of the fjord and the bottom fauna of the shallow coastal region around Bruce City are described. A densely populated bird feeding zone at a point where a drainage stream issued from the Nordenskiold Glacier was found to contain enormous numbers of the Euphausid, Thysanoessa inermis, which was the principal food of the birds. Data on the size and breeding of Sagitta elegans and Thysanoessa inermis are given. Comparatively low phosphate values were recorded for the sea at various depths in the fjord and conditional density determinations show the beginning of the autumnal vertical circulation early in September.
