Cowpens National Battlefield 2000–2001 Natural Resources Inventory of Non-Volant Small Mammals: Final Report

Ferris DK. 2001. Cowpens National Battlefield 2000–2001 Natural Resources Inventory of Non-Volant Small Mammals: Final Report

The goal of this project was to develop an initial baseline inventory of non-volant (non-flying) small mammal species found in the Cowpens National Battlefield. Funding for the inventory was awarded July, 2000 and field sampling began in August 2000. Primary objectives of this inventory were: 1) Develop a list of all non-volant small mammal species present in the park. 2) Identify the distribution of non-volant small mammal species within the park. 3) Generate relative diversity and relative abundance indices for non-volant small mammal species in the park. 4) Estimate species abundance (where appropriate). 5) Identify any endangered species or species at risk within the park boundaries. Secondary objectives of this inventory were: 6) Develop monitoring protocols to facilitate long-term assessment of the parks small mammal populations. 7) Collect information in a manner that allows species data to be integrated using a geographical information system. 8) Identify any introduced or feral small mammal populations in the park. 9) Identify additional natural resource inventory needs.
