The habitat suitability index (HSI) models in this report on the white ibis are intended for use in the habitat evaluation procedures (HEP) developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1980) for impact assessment and habitat management. The models were developed from a review and synthesis of existing information and are scaled to produce an index of habitat suitability between a (unsuitable habitat) and 1 (optimally suitable habitat). Assumptions involved in developing the HSI models and guidelines for their application, including methods for measuring model variables, are described. These models are hypotheses of species-habitat relationships, not statements of proven cause and effect. The model s have not been field-tested.
