Streambed-sediment samples were collected at 22 sites during the summer of 1998 as part of the U.S. Geologic Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Sampling in the Clark Fork-Pend Oreille and Spokane River basins represented a wide range of environmental conditions including pristine mountain streams and large rivers affected by mining-related and urban activities. Samples were analyzed for 45 inorganic major and trace elements, 109 synthetic organic compounds, and carbon. Trace-element concentrations from this study were compared to median trace-element concentrations recorded during stream sampling across the Nation during 1992-1996. Analytic results for synthetic organic compounds were mostly reported as either estimated or non-detected values. The 1998 sampling sites were located in Washington, Idaho, and Montana; of the 10 Montana sites, 2 were in or near Glacier National Park (Middle Fork Flathead River near West Glacier and North Fork Flathead River near Columbia Falls).
