Late Tertiary and Pleistocene limestones surrounding and locally overlying the relatively impermeable Eocene volcanic rocks which form the core of Saipan are the principal source of ground-water supplies. Both high-level (perched) and basal unconfined aquifers are present; the latter, though susceptible to sea-water contamination, are capable of yielding up to two million gallons per day of potable water if properly developed by means of basal tunnels rather than drilled wells.
