Songbird Monitoring in the Point Reyes National Seashore: Results of the 1997 Field Season

In order to assess health of songbird populations breeding in Point Reyes National Seashore, we used multiple standardized monitoring techniques, including fixed-radius point counts, nest monitoring, spot mapping, and vegetation measurements in riparian and coastal scrub habitats during the 1997 breeding season. Species diversity was highest in riparian habitat. In riparian habitat, species richness and diversity were highest at undisturbed sites and lowest at burned sites. In coastal scrub habitat, diversity was highest at ungrazed sites. Nest predation was the most significant nest mortality factor.
