Wildland Urban Interface: Bird Abundance and Diversity in the 2002 Field Season

During the summer of 2002, PRBO conducted songbird surveys in areas where fire fuel reduction treatments are slated to occur (i.e., fire defensible areas). These areas included Elk Range North, Elk Range South, Wittenberg, Bear Valley, Bolinas Ridge North, Highway One, and Palomarin. These surveys provide baseline data on songbird abundance and community composition against which potential changes due to fuel reduction treatments can be assessed. Additionally, PRBO conducted rapid surveys of areas where disturbance was proposed to occur during the songbird breeding season. This progress report summarizes work conducted in the summer of 2001 (rapid surveys only) and 2002.
