In recent years, numbers and productivity of black-legged kittiwakes(Rissa tridactyla) have been declining in various areas of the Cook Inlet ecosystem (J. Piatt, NBS, pers. comm.). The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has started a long term study in this area to identify potential causes for the decline. In Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, the black-legged kittiwake colony at Slope Mountain has been monitored sporadically. In 1996, a more systematic approach, developed by the USFWS, (J. Piatt, NBS, pers. comm., R. Yerxa, NPS, pers. comm.) was used to determine productivity and obtain a adult population estimate.
