Peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) have historically nested along the Cook Inlet coastline of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (NPS records). In 1975, a pair of peregrines were observed on the north end of Chisik Island, Tuxedni Bay (Haugh and Potter 1975). Although Haugh and Potter (1975) did not believe the falcons were nesting on Chisik they did state that "The Tuxedni Bay area,...appeared particularly favorable for nesting Peregrines." A nesting pair of falcons were located on a small cliff north of Difficult Creek in Tuxedni Bay in 1992 (NPS records). Even though peregrine falcon numbers in Alaska remain stable, as a top-level predator it is often used as an indicator of the general health of an ecosystem. Therefore, during June through August 1996, several cliffs were surveyed for nesting peregrine falcons along the Cook Inlet coastline of Lake Clark National Park.
