An informal age/sex compositional aerial survey was flown in Lake Clark Unit III South on November 19 and 22, 1999. The goal was to identify and record sex and age composition from a representative sample of the moose (100 moose) within the survey unit. The park PA-18 aircraft, with Leon Alsworth, pilot, and Dan Young, observer, conducted the survey. Moose were spotted opportunistically with units classified as High during the 1998 count surveyed first. Other units with relatively high numbers of moose in 1998 were sampled next until 100 moose in total were counted. Snow conditions were not as favorable as 1998, with some bare ground visible on the southern slopes on the first day of the survey. 3 inches of snow, however, fell in the area on November 21, 1999, which made sightings easier on the second day of the survey.
