Juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and least cisco (Coregonus sardinella) are the only planktivores inhabiting the limnetic zone of Lake Clark, Alaska. Lake Clark is a long narrow, oligotrophic lake with an influx of glacial run-off in the north end which creates a cline in turbidity from north to south. The limnetic distributions and potential for competition for food between juvenile sockeye salmon and least Cisco was examined by 1)Comparing their distributions during the day and night in three sampling periods during the summer of 1994; 2) Comparing the diets of the species to each other and to the available zooplankton in the limnetic zone; 3) Comparing the limnological characteristics across areas of the lake and 4) Compaing the feeding morphology of the species.
