Through a cooperative agreement with the Alaska Natural Heritage Program, botanist Rob Lipkin was designated the project coordinator. The field crew consisted of park volunteer Phil Caswell and AKNHP employee Anna Jansen with additional help from Biological Technician Eve Laeger (6 weeks), Rob Lipkin (2 weeks), and Penny Knuckles (1 week). The crew visited approximately 45 sites throughout the park. Sites were chosen to sample areas and habitats under-represented during previous surveys. Since Phil Caswell collected vascular plants in most areas accessible by fixed wing aircraft and boat in past years, we focused on areas only accessible by helicopter. Contrary to original plans, the study area was broadened to include coastal areas (sampled for about 14 days). A few high priority locations near the northern and southern boundaries of the park and preserve were not visited due to late snow conditions, conflicts in helicopter scheduling or poor weather conditions. We did, however, take advantage of shared logistics with coastal bear studies and archeological surveys for significant cost savings.
