The objective of this three-year intensive study would be to describe the water quality of the streams and rivers in National Parks located in the Cook Inlet NAWQA study unit, with a special emphasis on the geochemical characteristics of the Johnson River watershed. At the conclusion of this study, a sufficient water-quality database should exist to (1) help resource managers in the planning and decision-making, (2) predict the most likely effects of mining in the Johnson River watershed, and (3) assist the Cook Inlet NAWQA in describing the overall water quality of the basin. As a precursor to this proposed study, a small synoptic study has begun in FY98 as part of the Cook Inlet NAWQA to obtain a water-quality 'snapshot' of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of several streams. Five streams have been selected for study: Wildhorse Creek (Denali), Bear Creek (Denali), Johnson River (Lake Clark), Strike Creek (Katmai), and the Talkeetna River (reference site) (fig. 1). These sites will be sampled once after breakup in the spring of 1998. At each site, fine-grained streambed sediment and biological tissue will be collected and analyzed for trace elements and hydrophobic organic compounds. A reach of each stream will be selected that is representative of the surrounding area. Habitat and biological communities (fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, and algae) will then be characterized.
